WHY VOLUNTEER?

Be a Friend. Be a Mentor. Just be there.

Being a volunteer (Big) means sharing a little bit of your time with a mentee (Little). Each of us had a special person who opened doors and widened our horizons. As a Big, you can do the same for a child.

Being a Big is one of the best decisions you'll ever make. Children in metropolitan Detroit are facing many challenges. Being a Big allows you to be a part of the solution.

There are many ways to get involved with BBBS. There are three core mentoring programs, Community-based, Site-based and Activity-Based, (Sports Buddies) Mentoring. Find the program or opportunity that best fits your schedule and interests!

COMMUNITY-BASED MENTORING:

One-to-One Mentoring

Volunteers are matched with a child to share a variety of mutually enjoyable activities. Bigs and Littles spend individualized time on a regular basis, typically 2-4 times a month, for 2-3 hours. Through time together they develop a relationship that helps youth manage the everyday challenges that are part of growing up. During the time with their Big, children gain new skills, explore new interests and test behaviors that expand their experiences beyond their family or neighborhood.

Big Couples Mentoring

Couples find that sharing the responsibility of a Little fits within their hectic lives. This wonderful mentoring program gives couples the flexibility to spend one-on-one time separately with their Little brother or as a couple, at least 50% of the time spent with the child must be as a couple. The time commitment for this program is 2-4 times per month for at least one year. Both parties need to be sent in to complete an application.

What’s required of Community-Based Bigs?
- Age: 18 years of age or older
- Valid driver's license
- Vehicle with current auto insurance
- 1 year minimum time commitment
- Completion of application process

SCHOOL-BASED MENTORING:

We offer a Lunch Buddies and After-School Mentoring Program for elementary and middle schools. Volunteers are matched with children at a specific elementary school/site location to work one-on-one or in small groups to help students build academic, social and life skills. This mentoring program provides a wonderful opportunity for mentors who wish to volunteer in a more structured setting.

Volunteers are recruited, screened and trained by BBBSMD staff; consist of high school students and employees from nearby businesses and/or corporations. The mentors come to the school/site for at least one hour biweekly/weekly to work with 1-3 students, ages 7 and up. BBBSMD staff supervises and supports the sessions by providing tutoring, guidance and social-skills building activities for the children.

What's required of School/Site-Based Bigs?
- Age: High school sophomore, junior or senior (16+) or adult 18 years of age or older
- Personal transportation to & from site
- Completion of Application process

ACTIVITY-BASED MENTORING:

Sports Buddies

This Wonderful activity-based mentoring program offers an opportunity for BIGS and Littles to get to know each other while doing what men/boys enjoy most: "SPORTS". The Sports Buddies concept is simple: Volunteer "Big Brothers" are asked to meet two times a month with their "Little Brothers" to play a sport and/or watch a sport. Participatory activities can include but are not limited to flag football, softball, kickball fishing, bowling, soccer, volleyball, golf, or basketball. Spectator activities can include attending professional football, hockey, basketball or baseball games, plus other local college level sports clinics and camps. Big Brothers Big Sisters makes it easy for Sports Buddy participants, as most of the activities are pre-scheduled and free of charge.
