Volunteering is fun, big time.

Being a Big Brother or Big Sister is one of the most enjoyable things you’ll ever do. Not to mention, one of the most fulfilling. You have the opportunity to help shape a child’s future for the better by empowering them to achieve. And the best part is, it’s actually a lot of fun. You and your Little can share the kinds of activities you already like to do.

Play sports together. Go on a hike. Read books. Eat a pizza with extra anchovies. Or just give some advice and inspiration. Whatever it is you enjoy, odds are you’ll enjoy them even more with your Little—and you’ll be making a life-changing impact.

Start Something Today during the 7th Annual 100 Mentors in 100 Days Campaign!

Antoine Jackson, Manager of Engagement & Training
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has been called by many, the greatest leader to ever live. His journey through life was highlighted by his fight for the civil liberties that many enjoy today. Dr. King’s passion and dedication are applauded each year as we honor his legacy, his dream and his life on what has become known as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. How fitting it is that the month of January not only celebrates such a remarkable person, but it has become recognized as National Mentoring Month. Across our nation for an entire month mentoring is highlighted and celebrated as volunteers, donors and community members join hand in hand to provide positive adult role models for youth. I believe Dr. King would be proud of the work being promoted during the month of January. One of my favorite quotes by the late Dr. King says “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?”

I am proud to say that Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit is ready with an answer to this question as we kick off our 7thAnnual 100 Mentors in 100 Days Campaign and we invite you to join us as we are Focused on the Future: Inspire. Believe. Advocate. This annual signature campaign has been recognized across the nation to be effective over the last six (6) years. Over the years we have effectively reached and exceeded our goal of recruiting 100 Mentors in 100 Days. During last year’s campaign, we focused on putting MEN back into MENtoring recognizing the ever growing need for more male mentors. In addition, we introduced a fundraising component to the campaign to raise additional funds to support new mentoring relationships. Our goal is to not only recruit 100 mentors in the first 100 days of the year but to also raise $100,000. When you join with us to help recruit additional mentors, you can help provide a child facing adversity with a caring mentor who provides guidance. Your financial support also makes a difference because funding helps provide the professionally trained staff to manage and support the volunteers, children and their families. Ultimately, our endeavor is to increase and grow the number of one-to-one match relationships for youth in Metro Detroit.

Make plans now to join us and Start Something! The 100 Mentors in 100 Days Campaign officially kicked off in January, National Mentoring Month and runs through April 9th. The campaign includes a multiplicity of recruitment and awareness activities and events designed to inspire individuals and community partners to believe and advocate for mentoring. We are partnering with local African American Fraternities during Black History Month and in March for National Reading Month. In addition we are partnering with corporate, small business, community and faith-based organizations for mentor recruitment.

The success of this campaign cannot be accomplished without the support of YOU! If you, your business or your organization would like to contribute mentors, funding or both, please contact me at (313) 309-9223 or at Antoine.Jackson@bbbsdetroit.org.
