Partnership in Action

Making a Difference: The Social Circle 2012

For the second year in a row, we have partnered with one of our corporate partners, Weber Shandwick Detroit to establish a Big Leaders Mentoring program called: The Social Circle. This program exposes Southfield High School students to the many facets of a career in Public Relations. In the month of April Southfield High School students spent the afternoon at the Weber Shandwick Detroit office where Stan Stein, Executive Vice President shared with the students tips on how build successful careers and debuted the video. As a result of the yearlong mentor program the students and mentors from Weber Shandwick produced a dynamic public service announcement/video.

The Big Leaders program is focused on engaging high school-aged youth with adult mentors exposing them to various career options. Through the Big Leaders: The Social Circle, our agency served as a mock PR client for the students and Weber Shandwick Detroit. Students in The Social Circle were asked to create a video to capture how their Bigs impacted their lives, and how other adults can make an impact on a child in their community as well. The students were able to not only learn the tools of social media but also make an inspiring video for their clients.

Dressbarn: "To Mom, With Love"

A number of mothers of youth in our program were given an unexpected treat of a new dress or skirt or pair of shoes for Mother's Day 2012, but their gift-giving children also received something special the thrill of brightening their mothers' lives with a little help from their mentors and dressbarn.

Dressbarn’s “To Mom, with Love” program brought 10 Littles into the Grosse Pointe store where they were given $50 gift cards to shop for their mothers. The Littles (mentees) and Bigs (mentors) visited the dressbarn at 22331 Moross Road, Grosse Pointe, MI 48236 on the day before Mother’s Day, Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Noon to shop for that special gift.

“This Mother’s Day, we’re working to make it possible for families that otherwise may not be able to afford a gift, to recognize the hard work, sacrifice and unique contributions that every mom makes to a home,” said Vivian Behrens, senior vice president, chief marketing officer at dressbarn.  “It’s a great program that helps honor someone who too often goes overlooked.”

“We are excited to work with dressbarn on this inaugural ‘To Mom, With Love’ program to benefit area families,” said Lynette Simmons, Vice President of Programs. “Most of our kids don’t have the resources to buy their mother a gift for the holiday, so this was such a great day for them, their moms and our volunteers.”
