WHY VOLUNTEER?
It’s the simple things
in life that form our favorite memories. Bigs and Littles find that little moments
truly are big magic. Think back to when you were a kid. Who was it that brought
magic into your life just by being there? Who do you always remember with a smile?
Being a Big means being yourself and sharing the best part of yourself with a friend.
Each of us had a special person who opened doors and widened our horizons. As a
Big, you can do the same for a child.
Being a Big is one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. It means a chance
to gain a new friend, and see the world—and be seen-- through fresh new eyes.
No matter where you are in life right now, being a Big will make it better.
There are many ways to get involved with BBBS. There are two core BBBS programs:
Community-based mentoring and Big Brothers Big Sisters in Schools or school-based
mentoring. Find the program or opportunity that best fits your schedule and interests!
Call (248) 569-0600 to volunteer.
COMMUNITY-BASED MENTORING: Volunteers
are matched with a child to share a variety of mutually enjoyable activities.
In the community-based program,
volunteer Bigs provide children and youth – our Littles – individualized
time and attention on a regular basis, typically 2-4 times a month, for 2-3 hours.
Through time together that they schedule, filled with conversations and shared activities,
they develop a relationship that helps youth manage the every day challenges that
are part of growing up. During the time with their Big, children gain new skills,
explore new interests and test behaviors that expand their experience base beyond
their family or neighborhood.
What’s required of Bigs?
- Age: 18 years of age & older
- Vehicle with current auto insurance
- 1 year minimum time commitment
SCHOOL-BASED MENTORING: Adult volunteer
mentors are matched with children at a specific elementary school to work one-on-one
or in small groups to help students build academic, social and life skills.
For our after-school mentoring programs, we partner with elementary and middle schools
that have a high school or a business located nearby from which we can recruit,
screen, and train mentors. The mentors come to the school for at least one hour
weekly to work with 1-3 students, ages 7 and up. Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS)
staff supervise the after-school sessions and provide tutoring guidance and social-skill
building activities for the children and their mentors.
School-based mentoring provides opportunities for volunteers who wish to volunteer
during the day and in a more structured setting. We primarily use high school-aged
mentors in our after-school programs. This helps to expand and deepen the mentoring
skills and volunteering experiences of these older students, while at the same time
offering the younger students a mentor with whom they will enhance their social
and academic skills. Everyone wins!
What’s required?
- Age: High school sophomore, junior or senior (16+)
- Personal transportation to & from site
- Corporate representative
