On January 20, 2021, a few weeks after a violent mob took over the Capitol, and mere months after the murder of George Floyd captured the world’s attention, a petite young woman stepped up to a mic in Washington, D.C. and reminded us that “...quiet isn’t always peace, and the norms and notions of what just is isn’t always just-ice”. Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman defined our moment in history to Step Up BIG and do something to end racial and social injustice. She also embodied the spirit of thousands of marginalized youth who, despite the effects of adversity, do achieve success in life.
In August, we launched our Step Up BIG Detroit! fundraising campaign to lean into action and make an impact on building social equity for youth. At our campaign kick off, we rallied together to take the first step in this community-wide effort and pledge to focus on our shared goals as we work together to bring about real change and impact the lives of youth in Metro Detroit for the better, forever. "Step Up BIG Detroit! is an invitation to join the mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters, a leading youth empowerment organization inspired to create equity and empowerment for the children and youth in our community who need us the most", said Rick Hampson, BBBSMD Board Chair.
“When you step up to support Big Brothers Big Sisters, you are doing something powerful to lift up the dreams of young persons left at a disadvantage by the deep divisions in our country surrounding race, prejudice, privilege, class, and perspective", added Jeannine Gant, BBBS CEO.
Step Up BIG Detroit! is an opportunity to make a commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion [JEDI] in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Whether you’re an individual, corporation, foundation or group, you believe that every child should be provided with what they need to achieve their full potential. You can help expand the reach of Big Brothers Big Sisters throughout metro Detroit and connect more youth to a trained mentor who will provide friendship, opportunities, information, and resources to broaden their horizons about what is possible in life. Supporters of this campaign become a part of an informed allyship, pulling together and affirming that every youth be given an equitable opportunity to achieve success.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Detroit is excited to invite you to become a part of their journeys and our collective story. Join us by STEPPING UP BIG today!
